Arc Flash Protective Clothing
The recently (2004 to be specific) published edition of the NFPA 70E Standard (Standard for Electrical Safety Requirements for Employee Workplaces) by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires that “wherever there is possible exposure to an electric arc flash, employees or site visitors must wear flame resistant (FR) protective clothing that meets the requirements of ASTM F1506. The standard also requires employers to perform a flash hazard analysis to determine the flash protection boundary distance. This mean employees working within these arc flash boundaries require certain protective clothing known as Arc Flash Protective Clothing.
Arc Flash Protective Clothing can be defined as safety clothing specially designed to protect employees working in areas posing hazards of any sort but mainly when there’s possible exposure to an electric arc flash. This clothing design is such that they meet the NFPA 70E standards described above and have a verified arc thermal performance value (ATPV) that meets the value listed in the “Protective Clothing Characteristics” section of the standard.
