A visual workplace is key component to any successful lean environment. So much time is lost looking for misplaced tools and supplies, which makes it is very important to create a space that can accommodate and organize all needed items. Once tools have been sorted appropriately, it is extremely helpful to use visual organization tools in order to keep important and commonly used tools organized and accounted for. For instance, the outlining of the tool is crucial because that will enable any worker who needs it to find it--and know where to put it at the end of the work shift.

Furthermore, workers need a visual cue as to where individual work zones are located without having to spend much time deciphering between different work zones. This is an aspect of lean where the "setting in order" comes into place via visual signals (i.e, floor tapes in various colors). By implementing visual signals, employees and visitors alike understand the importance of knowing where everyone and everything should be. No time is then wasted on anything other than the specific job at hand.
