From tire rotations to transmission repairs, mechanics oversee a wide variety of repairs and maintenancing to keep vehicles in good working condition, and ensure they’re consistently safe and reliable at all times. However, automotive service centers, dealerships, and specialized repair shops are oftentimes incredibly busy and fast pace, and it can be difficult for mechanics to maintain the focus they require to accomplish certain tasks with ease. Creating an environment that’s organized and follows the basic principles of 5S can allow mechanics to keep that focus they need, as well as reduce the risk of injury, while working on customer or fleet vehicles. This can involve removing broken or obsolete equipment, organizing and labeling tools, keeping vehicle bays clear of debris and spills, create a standardized procedure when inspecting vehicles, and encouraging regular technician training.
