Case Studies

Case Study #1: A fleet management company providing logistics services

Products used:

SafetyTac® Floor Tape | Floor Signs | Smart Stripe™ Arrows

The Task:

A fleet management company needed to replace the floor markings in the shop area at one of its warehouse locations. Some parts of the floor had painted floor lines that were worn, making them less noticeable. Other areas lacked floor markings. Since forklifts and other equipment move in and out of this area, the business needed clear markings to facilitate the safe movement of vehicles.

The Solution

Red SafetyTac® Floor Marking Tape was used to outline vehicle pathways and forklift parking spaces. They also used yellow tape and hazard tape (black/yellow, red/white) to highlight other important areas and aid with the organization of equipment.

Floor signs were used to emphasize what designated spaces should be used for forklift parking signs were placed in each parking space, "No Forklift Area" signs were used where vehicle traffic isn't allowed, and forklift crossing signs were placed so pedestrians know where to look out for forklifts.

Additionally, yellow Smart Stripe Arrows were placed on the floor to direct traffic from a nearby pedestrian entrance.

The Results

SafetyTac® Floor Marking Tape allowed for the creation of clear lines for vehicle and foot traffic in the shop. These new lines are bright and very noticeable. Combining these markings with relevant floor signs to direct forklift traffic, the company has made it easier for forklifts and other vehicles to move around the facility safely. The odds of a collision are reduced when clear traffic markings are employed.

Case Study #2: Precision metal fabricator for the aerospace industry

Products used:

Floor Tape | LabelTac® | Foam

The Task:

This Lean manufacturing facility focuses on quality and on-time delivery to satisfy its customers. The company recently held an Accelerated Improvement Workshop (AIW) in its grommet and deburr cell to improve organization and make the space easier to navigate.

The Solution

To achieve higher levels of order in this area, participants in the AIW used visual tools including floor marking tape, a LabelTac® Industrial Label Printer, and foam tool kits. Using floor marking tape, they created borders on the floor around desks, racks, and tables to mark where furniture should go. Different colors were used to highlight different areas. This technique was especially helpful for racks with wheels, which occasionally move from their proper locations.

With the help of a LabelTac® Industrial Label Printer, the team also organized work in process (WIP) in a clearer way. The new system includes shelf labels and marked bins with color-coded labels so workers can quickly identify the contents of each container.

Finally, they also organized hand tools such as scissors and screwdrivers using foam tool kits. Previously, these items had been stored in bins. Now they're stored in drawers and held in place with tool foam. This keeps the tools from getting damaged. It's also very apparent when a tool is missing because the kit's bright yellow bottom layer highlights its absence.

The Results

Combined, these visual techniques have made it easier for employees to find the materials and tools they need, keep the workspace organized, and perform their tasks efficiently at the grommet and deburr cell.

Case Study #3: A Louisana plant that produces granulated sugar and other sweetners

Products used:

LabelTac®

The Task:

The company wanted to improve organization and increase efficiency at its Louisiana plant by labeling storage areas with visual cues and instructions. It also wanted to add labels to the machine shop for added safety and efficiency.

The Solution

The MRP Controller purchased a LabelTac® Industrial Label Printer to create detailed labels. With the printer, the company made labels tailored to its specific needs.

For example, labels with item numbers were created to help people navigate storage areas. These labels were placed prominently on shelves. Up or down arrows were also added to the labels to indicate what items the labels referred to, which helped improve organization. Labels were also used for large items such as motors, sprockets, reducers, and gears.

Smaller labels were used on drawers and on smaller shelves to aid with organization as well.

Additionally, labels were created for use on parts and equipment in the facility's machine shop.

The Results

By adding labels to its storage areas and its machine shop, this plant saw a number of benefits. Cycle counts, put-aways, and picks all improved because employees could more easily verify items and their locations. Housekeeping also improved because everything has a clearly marked place. The appearance of the workplace improved as well, and the company reports that it now looks cleaner and more professional.

Case Study #4: An Indiana manufacturing plant

Products used:

Floor Tape | Floor Signs | LabelTac®

The Task:

This manufacturing plant needed to improve traffic flow in its facility. Pedestrians and forklifts routinely move through the same space, which can create safety hazards. They were looking for bright, visual tools that would make it easier for people and vehicles to navigate the workspace.

The Solution

The company purchased 3" wide SafetyTac® Floor Marking Tape in red, yellow, green, white, and hazard (red/white) to create pedestrian walkways. They also selected a variety of floor signs including "Stop – Look Out for Forklifts," "Pedestrian Crossing," and "Quality Control," as well as orange arrows to indicate the direction traffic should flow. Additionally, they purchased a LabelTac® Industrial Label Printer to create labels for parking spaces, supply areas, and more.

Using these tools, they outlined walking paths, created parking spaces for forklifts, and highlighted areas that are particularly dangerous.

Custom Building Products - Floor Marking

"We have many visitors coming into our facility and we get nothing but good comments about how nice our facility looks… Our facility is both a much more organized and safer place for all of our employees, vendors, and guests."

– The Facility's Production Manager

The Results

These visual floor markings have allowed employees at Custom Building Products in Indiana to more easily and safely move through the workplace. Forklifts now have specific locations for parking, and people know to stop and look for cross traffic in areas where pedestrians and forklifts could intersect.

Additionally, the visual markings have made the facility feel more professional and more organized.

Case Study #5: A corporation providing system solutions for industrial facilities

Products used:

SafetyTac® Floor Tape | Floor Shapes

The Task:

One of this company's warehouse locations wanted to create clear boundaries around hazardous areas, work areas, and places where movable equipment (like trash bins, carts, etc.) should be placed. In wide-open floor spaces, it wasn't clear where equipment belonged and where it was safe for people to go.

The Solution

The company used solid white and solid green SafetyTac® Tape to create boundaries around work cells. They also used SafetyTac® Hazard (yellow/black) to outline areas where people need to use extra caution such as in places where vehicles enter the facility and near fire extinguishers.

Floor marking shapes also helped this company achieve its goals. White strips and corners were used to mark areas where movable equipment such as carts and bins are placed. Combined, these markings break up floor space into color-coded areas.

The Results

The new floor markings help employees and visitors to the warehouse better understand where things should go, where extra caution should be taken, and where work cells end. It is now easier to work in and move through the warehouse.

Case Study #6: An organization that provides volleyball training for children and teen student athletes

Products used:

Smart Stripe Tape

The Task:

The organization's teams practice and play at a few different facilities, and one of the facilities needed floor markings for a multipurpose volleyball and basketball court. The club's director contacted Creative Safety Supply about whether a floor tape could be used to create the lines on the floor. The club was looking for something that would be easy to install, long lasting, and professional looking.

The Solution

After discussing the situation, Smart Stripe Tape was chosen to create the appropriate lines for the basketball and volleyball courts. A team installed the markings on the gym floor, using white tape for the basketball court markings and yellow tape for the volleyball court markings. The tape worked well for all the straight lines and the curved 3-point line. (The center circle and half circle above the foul line were made with paint.)

Integrity Volleyball Club Floor Tape

"We love your product… We used the 2" Smart Stripe Tape to lay down a curved 3 point line on a basketball court - it saved us a whole lot of time!"

– The Organization's Director

The Results

Using floor tape instead of paint for most of the court allowed the club's director and his team to quickly install new markings. Less paint meant less mess, and most of the court was ready for use without needing to wait for paint to dry. The resulting markings are bright, clean, and durable.

Case Study #7: A water district in Southern California

Products used:

Pipe Marking Labels | LabelTac®

The Task:

One of the water district's water treatment plants underwent an upgrade project. Afterward, the facility was looking to improve its pipe marking system. While the plant did have some marked pipes, managers wanted to make adjustments and add labels so the color scheme was consistent, easy to understand, and complied with all ANSI and OSHA requirements.

The Solution

The water district developed an improved color scheme for labeling pipes that contained fluids and gases such as water, ozone, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid. A team used a LabelTac® Printer to create new labels for use indoors and outdoors at the water treatment plant. Many of the labels contained arrows to indicate flow direction and colored banding appropriate for pipe marking labels in water treatment facilities.
