How Can I Improve Forklift Safety in My Facility?

Workplace safety is an essential goal that all companies should be focusing on. One of the best places to start is going to be with forklift safety since there are many accidents and injuries involving forklifts each year. Fortunately, there are quite a few simple things that you can do to improve forklift safety in your facility that won’t take a lot of time or money.

To start with, you will want to make sure that you are providing all of your forklift operators with the proper personal protection equipment. Giving them things like hard hats, gloves, protective footwear, and more will go a long way to ensuring they can operate the forklift properly at all times. They should also be instructed to wear their seatbelt anytime they are using the forklift, even if it is only for a few seconds.

Another great thing you can do to improve forklift safety is to teach the operators and anyone else in the area how to use visual communication. This will allow everyone in the area to communicate even if it is loud, which can be very beneficial. Of course, establishing common sense safety policies like speed limits, proper loading techniques, and more will also go a long way toward ensuring a safer environment.

While these things will definitely help to improve the overall safety of your forklifts, they are not the only options. As with all safety efforts, you should take a position of continuous improvement. Every time there is an accident or near-miss, for example, evaluate the situation and see what can do to further improve forklift safety.
