Does OSHA have forklift regulations?

Forklifts are one of the most common types of vehicles used in many workplaces. They can be found in manufacturing, warehouses, shipping facilities, and much more. While the benefits of a forklift are obvious, the hazards associated with them can often be overlooked. This is why it is so important to take forklift safety throughout all facilities. Some companies and safety managers make the mistake of believing that OSHA doesn’t have forklift regulations, but that is not actually the case.

Finding OSHA Forklift Regulations

OSHA does not have a specific section or regulation that is dedicated exclusively to forklift safety, which is why some people have difficulty finding the information needed. Instead, all powered industrial trucks are covered by a variety of different standards focused on each industry in which they are used. For general industry, a safety manager should look at 29 CFR 1910, and specifically at 1910.178 in order to learn about relations related to powered industrial trucks.

OSHA has sections for marine terminals, longshore facilities, and more. This is done because the specific requirements of powered industrial trucks will vary depending on the environment. Learning about the OSHA regulations for the type of environment that is relevant will help to ensure the proper operation of these vehicles, and the compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Implementing OSHA Standards for the Workplace

Once the specific OSHA regulations for a given industry are found, the safety manager or other manager will have to develop a set of processes and procedures to remain in compliance. The forklift drivers should be provided with training on how to operate the machine properly as well as what regulations are in place. Anyone who works around these vehicles should also be given safety training since they will play a major role in helping to avoid accidents.
