Why is social distancing still important?

As the restrictions imposed on businesses and people throughout the country are lifted, it can be tempting to try to return things back to normal. While the risk of COVID-19 has gone down thanks to the actions taken by everyone, the virus is still there. Taking reasonable precautions will help to ensure that the virus does not start to spread more quickly, which may make it necessary to increase restrictions once again. One of the most important precautions that people can take is to continue practicing social distancing.

Keep the Positive Momentum

The country took very dramatic steps to help ‘flatten the curve’ for COVID-19, and according to virtually all experts, these steps have been quite effective. Thankfully businesses, parks, and other areas of the community are able to start opening back up again. In order to avoid a resurgence of the virus, however, people still need to be careful. Practicing social distancing can help to maintain the momentum that was started when everything was shut down.

Protecting the Vulnerable

Social distancing is also an important thing that we can do to help protect the most vulnerable people in our communities. It is not possible to know who has a compromised immune system, or who cares for someone with elevated risk factors at home. For this reason, everyone should work hard to make sure they are staying six feet apart from each other. This will reduce the risk of spreading the virus should someone have it, which will provide added protection for those who need it most.

Help to Stay Healthy

Social distancing is a concept that gained traction specifically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fact is, however, that it is a good practice to limit all types of contagious diseases. While nobody wants to stay six feet apart from others forever, this should be a skill that everyone learns. This way even after the pandemic has ended, people will know how to self-impose social distancing when they are feeling sick, or when they have someone in their home that isn’t well. Working together, everyone can enjoy a healthier society.
