What role does genetic modification have in the agricultural industry?

Towards the end of the 20th century when genetic modification was successfully implemented for the first time, it revolutionized the agricultural industry. By altering an organism's DNA, scientists are able to improve resistance to pests and diseases to maximize growth productivity, having significant impacts on modern day agriculture:

Resistance to pests and disease

By incorporating specific genes into crops, genetic modification scientists can create a natural barrier against pests and diseases which means the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers are reduced. Since pests and diseases pose wide scale threats to the agriculture industry, the modern capabilities of genetic modification mean it has become possible to develop disease-resistant crop varieties that naturally deter insects and disease from attacking the crops. This method improves crop yield and minimizes economic losses, creating an answer to common challenges which farmers have faced for centuries.

Sustainability

Through developing genetically modified crops that do not require chemicals to successfully grow, the ecological impact of farming practices is reduced as the need for pesticides and fertilizers is removed. As well as this, genetic modification techniques are beginning to override more traditional methods which are contributing towards water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, eradicating synthetic fertilizers to help conserve ecosystems. As well as being better for the environment, chemical-free produce is a much more appealing prospect to consumers, creating a more natural food source.

Enhanced crop production

Genetic modification means scientists are able to develop crops with not only improved yields, but also an improved tolerance to harsh weather conditions and increased nutritional value. By utilizing genes that enable plants to hold nutrients more efficiently and deter pests and disease, farmers are able to maximize their food production to maintain a continuous supply, growing their business through reliable yield.
