What are the Occupational Hazards in a Hospital?

Every industry has its own set of occupational hazards that need to be identified and addressed to keep employees and others as safe as possible. Hospitals are a unique workplace in that there are a variety of different types of occupational hazards that do not exist in most other places. In addition, each hospital is going to be unique in some ways so coming up with set policies to mitigate them must be done on a case-by-case basis.

Some examples of common occupational hazards in hospitals include things like having to work with sharp items (needles, scalpels, etc), having to work closely with patients who may be unpredictable, and working with lots of dangerous drugs. Other types of occupational hazards may only be present in certain situations. For example, when patients are coming into the area, blood may be spilled while transporting them into the proper room. This not only presents a biohazard, but it also represents a slip-and-fall hazard.

Coming up with the best way to mitigate these types of occupational hazards can be difficult, but it is important for ensuring that employees are safe and patients get the care they need. When putting policies in place to help address occupational hazards, it is important to look at how to address these types of hazards and ensure the best level of care is provided. This can make it difficult, but finding the right balance is well worth the effort.
